Designed by Elisabeth Drewes Kofoed (1877-1948) for Bing Grøndahl

Elisabeth Drewes Kofoed was a Danish artist and porcelain painter known for her work at the prestigious
porcelain manufacturer Bing & Grøndahl from around 1895 to 1912.
She was one of the notable female artists in Danish decorative arts during the turn of the 20th century.
She studied at the Drawing and Art Industrial School for Women in Copenhagen,
which was led by prominent female artists Emilie Mundt and Marie Luplau. In 1903,
she married fellow porcelain painter Hans Kofoed, who also worked for Bing & Grøndahl.

At Bing & Grøndahl, Kofoed specialized in underglaze painting,
creating unique porcelain pieces often inspired by nature. Her motifs included chestnuts,
magnolias, mushrooms, and other organic elements, often enhanced with fine gold reliefs or delicate metal detailing. One of her most famous works,
a vase decorated with magnolias from 1898, was exhibited at the 1900 Paris Exposition.

Her work was recognized both in Denmark and internationally.
She exhibited at several major art and design exhibitions, including at the Museum of Decorative Arts in
Copenhagen and the Artists’ Autumn Exhibition (Kunstnernes Efterårsudstilling).
In 1906, the French journal La Chronique des Arts et de la Curiosité praised her work as “charming.”

Today, her pieces are part of permanent collections in institutions such as the Designmuseum Denmark,
the Bröhan Museum in Berlin, the National Museum in Oslo, and CLAY Museum of Ceramic Art Denmark.
