Designed by Fanny Garde (1855–1928) for Bing Grøndahl

Fanny Garde was a Danish porcelain artist and one of the pioneering women at the renowned porcelain manufacturer Bing & Grøndahl.
She is best known for her role in the development of the company’s famous underglaze painting technique,
which became a hallmark of Danish porcelain in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Garde studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and the School of Drawing and Applied Arts for Women in Copenhagen.
In 1885, she began working for Bing & Grøndahl and quickly became a central figure in their artistic team.

Her breakthrough came in 1888, when she—together with fellow artist Effie Hegermann-Lindencrone—developed the company’s first successful pieces in the underglaze technique. One of the most notable works from this period was the Heron Vase,
which was exhibited at the Nordic Exhibition in Copenhagen the same year and marked a turning point in Danish porcelain design.

Fanny Garde’s designs were heavily inspired by nature, particularly flora and fauna, and often featured delicate,
stylized plants, birds, and marine life. Her elegant, naturalistic style helped define the aesthetic of Bing & Grøndahl’s Art Nouveau period.

She worked with the company for several decades and continued to influence its artistic direction.
Alongside Hegermann-Lindencrone, she was among the first women in Denmark to gain recognition in the male-dominated field of ceramic art.

Fanny Garde is remembered as a trailblazer in Danish decorative arts and a key contributor
to the international success of Bing & Grøndahl porcelain. Her works are held in major museum collections,
including the Designmuseum Denmark and CLAY Museum of Ceramic Art Denmark.
